Each time I turn on the TV, open the internet, or scroll through socials, I’m hit with a wave of grief due to the state of the world we are living in. To my core it brings me so much sadness to see the way people treat each other today. The way money dictates decisions, and the impossible task of determining which leaders and news sources we can trust. The instability of the world around us feels almost too much to emotionally accept at times.
In a world that is constantly moving and changing like the wind, my anxious heart (like many others I’m sure) was so deeply in need of something solid to stand on.
Tonight while studying the book of Hebrews I was reminded that I don’t need to hunt for stability. I was reminded that while the world changes, God does not.
The Unchanging Nature of God
Hebrews chapter 1 gives us an overview of the greatness and authority of Christ. The unnamed writer compares Jesus to the angels and emphasizes his divine nature and superiority. In this writing, we are shown an incredible truth about God’s character.
” You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end” Hebrews 1:12
In this verse we can compare the world to the robe and garment. It changes. It gets worn, and used, and its time will come to an end. Everything around us will one day expire. Governments, cultures, economic systems, even creation itself. It will all change, it is all an unstable thing, and we would be foolish to put our faith in any of it.
God remains the same.
He is not shaped by cultural shifts, human opinion, trends, or circumstances. The God who existed thousands of years ago is the same God who reigns today.
A Constant in an Unstable World
The audience being written to in Hebrews were facing uncertainty, persecution, and pressures to abandon their faith. Their world felt unstable, and unpredictable.
The writer reminds them that their hope was anchored in an unchanging God. Just as ours is today.
When the headlines feel overwhelming, and the future seems scary and uncertain, we can remember that God’s character does not fluctuate with the circumstances of the world.
He is still:
- Faithful
- Sovereign
- Merciful
- Loving
- Forgiving
- Gracious
The same God who led His people through the wilderness, who fulfilled His promises through Christ, and who sustained the early church is still actively working today.
Why God’s Consistency Matters
In a culture where everything is constantly evolving, a sense of stability is hard to come by. As humans we often tend to look for security in careers, finances, relationships and political systems. We must be reminded that every human made system will eventually change and/or fail.
God’s unchanging nature is another thing on the list of things that He can offer us that the world will never be able to. True security.
Because God does not change His promises remain trustworthy.
